The Many Forms of Single Motherhood

Single motherhood does not look the same for everyone. Some of us are here because of divorce, because a relationship didn’t last, or because we lost a partner and had to keep going for ourselves, and for our children. Some of us made the deliberate, courageous choice to become a mother on our own - through IVF or through adoption. Some of us became mothers by stepping up to raise a niece or nephew when a sibling could not.

There are so many paths to single motherhood, so many stories, so many different ebbs and flows, aches and pains, and hardships that are unique to each of us.

But here is what every single one of those paths has in common: dedication. love, and an unwavering commitment to raising a child.

At Vesta’s Village, we are not here to judge your circumstances. We are here because motherhood is hard - single motherhood can often feel nearly impossible - and because WE deserve support.

One of the things that sets Vesta’s Village apart is that we understand that just because you don’t fall below the poverty line doesn’t mean you are not struggling. It doesn’t mean you are able to pay your bills without stress. It doesn’t mean you can keep a roof over your head without fear. We know that. We live that.

While other resources may turn you away because of an income threshold, that is not how we work.

That is not our goal.

Our goal is to welcome single mothers in all the many forms that single motherhood comes in. If you are lonely, if you are struggling financially, if you are navigating your mental health, if you need resources and don’t know where to turn - our goal is to be that village.

We want to build something real here. A community where mothers show up for each other like best friends, soulmates, and chosen family.

We may not always see eye to eye, but we can always show up. We can support each other, lean on each other, and help each other raise our children so that they have the best opportunities we can give them.

For our daughters, we want to show them what strength looks like. What independence looks like. We want them to grow up knowing that no obstacle in this world should hold them back, that they are capable and smart. We can model this for them.

For our sons, we want to raise them to understand what it means to truly show up, to be good fathers, to be good partners, to be voices against misogyny and against any harm done to women. We want to raise sons who become the kind of male leaders and figures we want to see in the world, surrounding them with a village that embraces kindness, friendship and sharing, and showing them the strength and power of united maternal energy.

That is what this is about.

Not just surviving single motherhood, but building something together that makes it easier, richer, and less isolating for all of us - a village where we raise each other up, and where we raise our children, together.
