In Los Angeles County, over 30% of single mothers live below the poverty line - not because they lack
strength, but because the systems meant to support them have failed.
The current federal poverty line for a mother with one child is just $21,440 a year.
For two children, it is $26,820.
In a city where rent, food, and childcare costs continue to climb, these numbers don't reflect reality - and yet they determine who qualifies for support.
If a mother earns just a little more than those limits, she may not be eligible for housing assistance, food programs, or childcare subsidies. But she also still won't earn enough to cover even the basics.
In fact, 77% of single mother renters in L.A. are rent-burdened, and nearly half spend over 50% of their income on housing alone. Not to mention, full time childcare can cost as much as $24,000 a year per child.
For so many single moms, life is unsustainable. It is stressful. It is lonely. It often feels defeating. But it doesn't have to be this way.
Vesta's Village is a new model - one that centers care, community, and financial freedom.
We are building a healing-rooted cooperative community where single mothers can access housing, childcare, emotional support, and real pathways to financial stability and shared ownership.
This isn't about giving handouts or saving anyone. This is about redistributing power, rebuilding trust, and honoring the labor and leadership of mothers who have been long overlooked.
